MILWAUKEE -- This was one narrow escape for Kevin Gregg and the Chicago Cubs. Gregg retired pinch hitter Scooter Gennett on a fly ball to the wall with a runner on, preserving the Cubs 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. Scott Feldman pitched six solid innings and Anthony Rizzo had a key two-run single for Chicago, which is tied with Milwaukee for last place in the NL Central. Luis Valbuena, Starlin Castro and Brian Bogusevic had two hits apiece. Feldman (7-6) gave up three runs and six hits in his first victory this season against an NL Central opponent. He retired 11 of his last 14 batters. "Hell manage an inning when things start to go a little haywire," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "He ends up giving up one run a lot of times instead of a crooked number. He manages the inning as well as anybody on this team." But Feldman almost received a no-decision when Gregg struggled in the ninth. Juan Francisco started the inning with a homer and Rickie Weeks followed with a double. Weeks advanced to third on Logan Schafers sacrifice and then was thrown at home when he tried to score on Yuniesky Betancourts bouncer to third baseman Valbuena. "Valbuena made that great stop and Welington (Castillo) hung onto it with Rickie Weeks (charging at him)," Feldman said. "You know that is like a linebacker coming at you there and he was able to hold onto the ball." Gennett then hit a drive that Nate Schierholtz hauled in at the wall in right. "The bottom line is if we win by one, great," said Gregg, who earned his 12th save in 12 chances. "You dont want to give up any runs but you want to win, that is the first and foremost thing as you go out there." Feldman bounced back from a loss in his previous start at St. Louis. The 6-foot-7 right-hander could be an attractive target for a contender looking for pitching help ahead of next months non-waiver trade deadline. "There is nothing I can do about it," Feldman said. "I would love to stay on this team. I love the guys here. We are headed in the right direction. It is kind of out my control at this point." Castro also scored a run in his return to the lineup after sitting out Tuesdays game, snapping his streak of 269 consecutive games played. Castro has been battling a terrible June slump, hitting .146 this month with no home runs and three RBIs. Ryan Sweeney homered in the third and Valbuena scored on Rizzos single in the fourth that was set up by an error on second baseman Weeks. "That was huge." Sveum said. "We had numerous chances to break that game wide open and luckily we got one hit out of all that stuff to separate us a little bit." Milwaukee right-hander Yovani Gallardo (6-7) struggled with his command and was charged with five runs, three earned, and eight hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out five. "Tough outing for him," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "His command was just off. He made some good pitches, but he didnt have the consistency. Usually even when he gets high pitch counts and hes a little off on his command, he still keeps us in the ballgame better than he did tonight. But we also didnt play very good behind him." Gallardo came into the game with a 21-inning streak of not allowing an earned run. After escaping a first-inning jam, his streak was snapped when he gave up two runs in the second. "The ball was up," Gallardo said. "I was leaving it up in the zone and thats what led to the big hits they got. I felt good but that was the main thing, leaving the ball up in the zone." Brewers slugger Aramis Ramirez got his 2,000th career hit with a solo home run in the second inning. Ramirez, who ranks 15th in hits among active players, added an RBI single in the sixth inning. Cheap Jerseys Online .com) - The Los Angeles Kings peppered Ryan Miller with shot after shot. The Toronto Blue Jays are in an unfamiliar position. With just over two months to go in the season, the Jays hold the second Wild Card spot, are 2 1/2 games behind the A.L. East-leading Baltimore Orioles and have a very realistic chance at making the postseason for the first time since 1993. But they also have holes - and injuries - in their lineup that could easily lead to the drought continuing for another year. With MLBs non-waiver trade deadline on Thursday, Blue Jays fans will be seeking additions of some sort for the stretch run. Realistically, general manager Alex Anthopoulos wont be able to pick up everything on his wish list. So the question is - what do the Blue Jays need the most in order to make the best possible run for the playoffs? Second Base With injuries to Brett Lawrie, Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind, the Jays have had to run with a makeshift infield for the last little while, especially at second base. On Monday, Toronto picked up third baseman Danny Valencia, a player known for hitting lefties well over his career. Valencia has experience at second base as well, joining the likes of Munenori Kawasaki, Steve Tolleson and Ryan Goins, who have helped man the position for much of the season. With Lawrie (and the others) presumably close to returning, the Jays could keep the Canadian at third and continue with a platoon situation at second, or have Valencia play the hot corner while Lawrie jumps over to second which he did for a short stint earlier this season. There have been reports that the Blue Jays have shown interest in Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians, as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks Martin Prado and former Jay Aaron Hill. Is the return of Lawrie and the addition of Valencia enough for the Toronto infield, or should they get more? Starting Pitching You can never have enough starting pitching. The early season debate on whether it would be a good iidea to deal Marcus Stroman for a veteran arm may seem unrealistic at this point as the rookie has arguably become the ace of the staff.dddddddddddd. R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle (who hasnt won a game since June 1), Drew Hutchison and J.A. Happ have all had peaks and valleys to their seasons. The injured Brandon Morrow is still a little ways away from returning and when he does, it will likely be as a reliever. Aaron Sanchez, 22, has been sharp in his two appearances from the bullpen, but John Gibbons and the Jays brass has given no indication theyll use him in a starting role this season. So does Toronto need to add a starting hurler? Jon Lester and David Price have been rumoured to be on the market, but its unlikely the Rays or Red Sox would trade within their division unless the Blue Jays come up with an incredible offer. Toronto may have to set their bar a little lower if they want to add to the rotation. Bullpen The Blue Jays bullpen hasnt been horrible this year, but it also hasnt been to the level of a season ago. Steve Delabar was an All-Star in 2013, but has spent much of 2014 with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Brett Cecil has seen an increase in his earned run average from last year and Sergio Santos never found his stride before being designated for assignment last week. Overall, Toronto has the fourth-worst reliever ERA in all of the majors at 4.37 and is tied for 10th in home runs allowed with 30. Casey Janssen, Aaron Loup, Todd Redmond and most recently Sanchez have been bright spots, but a playoff team can never have enough pitching depth. Antonio Bastardo of the Philadelphia Phillies is one player reportedly on the Jays radar. Are there any other areas on the diamond Toronto should consider investing in? What do the Blue Jays need the most in order to make the best possible run for the playoffs? As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '
